Had a minor dialogue problem with Paul during the last noval class. He really hates talking outloud in the story so he talked the new comers into creating a rather slow and meandering conversation that was so bad Adib insisted it be deleted, so I did. Now Paul is back down to saying only the minimal, and I have to admit that it suits his character. On the other hand, Laurie is still a caged chatterbox. She's sulking because she doesn't have much of a role in the first chapter (probably because that's all I'm going to write for that story). She and a few of the others are also a bit pissed that I still have no title for their story other than 'draft'. I want to call it something that hints at terrible things and a mystery relationship between Paul and the unnamed little boy in the first half of the first chapter, but I can't think of anything. My mind goes blank, even with all those songs in my music player and so many hundreds of millions of words floating around my head.
I'm feeling rather dull today, probably because of lack of sleep. I've started listening to Break No Bones by Kathy Reich on audio CD and while it's interesting it is stuffed with a few too many kilos of facts for my taste. I could understand from the TV show that Temperence is a character rather lacking in social skills, but I thought there was supposed to be some difference between how she came across in the book and how she's played on TV. I certainly expected more gore, at the very least. I've just started chapter six and all the gore I've seen is a few old bones, some soil discolouration and a bit of decomposed tissue. Wow. I'm so grossed out.
Also, could she have thrown in any more tired cliches? There's the southern gentleman with his fat, faithful old dog - the ignorant reporter too eager to get in anyone's way for a story - the best friend that understands Tempe implicity - the ex-husband that drops by with pets and groceries for a friendly chat - the daughter getting everything she wants out of life - a beach house just for Tempe - a student that reminds Tempe of how she used to be...
Shit. I need to hit something.
I wonder whatever happened to Poochie?
